Q&A With… Mark Consuelos
By Susan L. Hornik

You are hosting Age of Love, a dating competition where 40-something women go head-to-head with 20-something women for the attention of a 30-year-old man. What did you think of this concept?

My initial reaction was like all guys, of course—he’s going to date the younger women. And then I started to think about my friends of mine that are very attracted to older women.

I think this is a social experiment. It seemed like such a fun idea to me. But I wanted to make sure the tone would be appropriate and not offensive—I have a daughter, a wife and a mom. I’m a fan of women. I wanted both age groups to get equal time on the show.

Have you given the bachelor — tennis star Mark Philippoussis — romantic advice?

Yeah, I think I’m a confidant as well as a host. Somebody really wise once told me to never take advice from someone who’s more screwed up than you! So I really don’t want to give him too much advice. You know, I just want to kind of be there to keep the options open for him.

Do you think it’s harder for people to date in their 40s?

I really don’t know. I know it’s harder to deal with dating when you are also a parent. You don’t know if the person you are dating will be open to children. So I think there are probably more obstacles.

What did your wife, actress Kelly Ripa, think about you hosting a dating show?

One of her favorite shows is The Bachelor, so her first question was, ‘How is going to be different?’ Then [when she heard the premise] she rolled her eyes and said, “Wait a minute!” She’s moving closer to 40, you know… But then we talked about it a little bit more, and we have friends who are in these situations. One of our friend’s brothers, a 20-year-old, brought a woman who is 40 and has three children to dinner to meet his parents. Which is very interesting…

Have you watched reality dating shows with her?

Yeah, I usually watch. I walk in the room, and I can hear my wife screaming, “You’re so dumb. You set women back 20 years.”

Before Kelly, did you ever go out with an older woman?

I don’t remember life before Kelly, but I know there were a few! One in particular was significantly older, and I found her fascinating. Timing is everything though—it just wasn’t the right time for us.

If we all look at our past dating experiences, there’s always been that one sophisticated person with a lot of life experience that was extremely attractive and would have been an interesting option, but I think 15 years ago, [dating an older woman] wasn’t even a question. You heard about it, but now I think that you do see it more.

You’ve been married for 11 years. What’s the key to a successful relationship?

Well, we are often traveling and working separately, but that is a good thing. To have a little bit of separation and space has often worked for us. We knew that being in this (acting) business, you just have to flow with the changes. But as I get older, I really don’t want to be too far away from her and the kids.

And since we are both in the public eye, we try not to have arguments in public!

What do you like to do together?

Every weekend we go to the Hamptons. We get a sitter and then go out for a few hours. It’s fun to go crazy for the night! My wife is extremely spicy and special, so she really keeps that aspect of her alive in the relationship.

I would think that as a soap-opera veteran, you’ve had a lot of older women take interest in you!

I appeal really well to older women — younger women have no interest in me at all! — but my wife doesn’t mind. She is one really secure 36-year-old.
