Q&A With…David Spade
By Susan L. Hornik

On CBS’ Rules of Engagement, you play a guy who is a little too old for the bar scene, but keeps going out, trying to pick up younger women. Are there still guys like this out there?

It’s getting to be a fine line between him and me! Maybe I am one of them, I don’t know. The guy in the show was already written, and being DeNiro — as I am! — I figured out a way to mold my way into this character. And yes, there are a lot of guys like this—especially in Hollywood. There’s a good friend of mine that is exactly this way, in fact. He’s 40 and is in a band at night. He can’t get it together—he boozes every night until the club closes and has all these flashy shirts that are unbuttoned! He has a Bon Jovi look and needs to calm down. It is a little awkward to be around him—no one will tell him the truth.

I think audiences can appreciate three friends in different stages of their life. There is a bit of the grass-is-always-greener syndrome for all of us. My character sees what is nice about being married and engaged—and [the others] remember being single.

You also host The Showbiz Show on Comedy Central. Do you think that women like you for your sense of humor?

I guess it has to be something. There’s the house in Malibu and my sense of humor. I have heard both!

It seems that humor helps us get over those little bumps in relationships. Do you think that is true?

I have never gotten into marriage per se, but anything that has lasted a long time or that I have had a good time with is on kind of the same humor vibe as me, so yes. And the funny thing is, when you ask about a sense of humor, it is kind of like saying something generic like, ‘I like music.’ Well, what kind? Because you know, you are either with Louie Anderson or Howie Mandel. There are different types. And I get asked, what is funny to me? A girl that makes me laugh and is quick on her feet, too. I know I shouldn’t ask for anything, but I’d like that. And when she is cute and funny, that is great!

If you were to give your character dating advice, what would you say?

Not to try so hard. Girls either like you or they don’t. It is the same way when I like girls—I either do or don’t.

Do you know instantaneously if you like someone?

I know pretty quick, yeah. But sometimes their personalities grow on you, too. I would want them to understand that I don’t take life all that seriously, nor do I want heavy drama.

How do you feel about getting older and keeping up with dating?

Basically, I am not John Stamos. I can get away with a little more. I was told a year ago in the tabloids that I should not be in the same room with Heather Locklear because I am miserable and gross. Once that is beaten in your head, you have to do something about it!

Are you still friends with your ex?

Yes, Heather and I just talked today.
