Q&A With…Emily Deschanel
By Susan L. Hornik

This season, on Fox’s Bones, your character finds herself having to choose between two loves. Have you ever had that in your own life?

Sure! I don’t know if it’s ever like that though. Finding one person who likes you at the same time that you like them… it’s a rare thing.

What do you look for in a guy?

Everyone says a sense of humor. I think that’s important. Also, it would be good if he was confident but also possessing humility. And be quirky! I like men who are unpredictable. It’s more about their personality, not necessarily their looks.

What do you think is the worst mistake a woman can make when dating?

I think women gives themselves up and just follow the guy with whatever they want to do. I think it’s really easy to lose oneself. Women are natural caretakers and are nurturing. I think it’s important for women to exhibit their own autonomy and have their own life.

Do you go to your sister, actress Zooey Deschanel, for dating advice? Or does she come to you?

Both! We both go to our mom too. We really both respect each other’s opinion and talk it out.

What’s the best piece of relationship advice you’ve learned?

I think it’s important to try and see relationships from another point of view. I think you can get caught up in being right instead of understanding what the other person is dealing with. Really listen, and be empathetic to their needs.

Did you ever have a celebrity crush?

River Phoenix! I don’t have one now though—my boyfriend would be upset if I told anyone I had one! He’s been my crush for a while now.
