The Grey’s Anatomy star on race, romance, and why workaholics must start investing in their love life, pronto.

On Grey’s Anatomy, you play Dr. Burke, a workaholic who rarely gives much thought to his romantic life until he gets involved with Sandra Oh’s character, Cristina. Do you think singles can relate to this all-work-and-no-play mentality?

Absolutely. I think too often we see this in society, where people dedicate themselves to their work and don’t leave any time for anything personal. People need to get a life!

Is that why you think so many people end up dating someone they meet at work?

If you’re working in the same place for all those hours, day after day, you can’t help but bond with someone you’re working closely with. This has happened to a lot of my friends who are professionals working in hospitals—it’s really not that far from the truth.

You and Sandra have great chemistry on-screen. Off set, have you ever dated someone of a different race?

I dated outside of my race for years before I married my wife. When it comes right down to it, women are women—and Isaiah loves women, with all the moods, the intelligence and emotions that go along with that. Race doesn’t matter.

Do you have any advice for couples who are in interracial relationships?

If you are happy together, then really it doesn’t matter what color you are. You can never control who you end up falling in love with!

Got any overall dating advice?

Make sure you communicate after sex!

Now that you’ve been married for ten years, what would you say is the secret to a lasting relationship?

I think you have to work on knowing yourself first, before you try to fit into someone else’s life and understand them. This is a work-in-progress always, but I think if you work at it, you will have success. Also, you can have a great time together when you’re at home, but the real test is when you’re out there in the world, meeting new people. But if you are truly committed, this is never a problem.

What would you say is the best part about being in a relationship?

My wife is so supportive of me—she knows me very well and I am so inspired by her wisdom, I don’t know what I would do without her!
