The stars of The Family Stone offer dating advice and reveal their own memorable meet-the-parents moments.

Sarah, in this film you play a woman who meets her fiancé’s family during the holidays with less than desirable results. What was it like when you met your husband Matthew Broderick’s family for the first time?

Sarah: I actually met Matthew’s mother before we were dating, and his father had passed away a number of years ago. He has two sisters, and I met them in a more casual way over the period of our courtship, so I never faced that kind of phalanx of people waiting for me to disappoint or succeed.

And what about you, Luke? How have you fared in the meet-the-parents department?

Luke: It’s one of those things where you want to put your best foot forward. I’ll make the mistake of getting uncomfortable and just starting to blab. Invariably I say something either offensive or just stupid. It’s funny how often those things go badly.

Ever been on the other side of the coin, where you’re scrutinizing a family member’s new amour?

Sarah: I come from a large family, and as we’ve grown up, my siblings have brought dates home. We’ve had some experiences where we all draw the same conclusion about somebody rather quickly but we’ve shown decent behavior until they left the room. And then we were like, “Well you don’t really plan to spend a lot of time with this person, do you?!” But you can’t force someone to not have feelings for someone else. That’s a great way to form a wedge between family members.

Did your parents give you good dating advice?

Luke: Mainly it was my dad. He would always say to find somebody I got along with who elevated me. I didn’t know quite what that meant, but I think I got his point!

Sarah, in the movie your character ends up breaking things off with her fiancé to date his brother (Luke). Ever done a switcheroo like this in real life?

Sarah: That is such a nice way of looking at it: switcheroo. I have never—I’ve barely dated. I should speak to my husband and see if he is interested in a little bit of a switcheroo!

Well, well! But aren’t you happily married?

Sarah: That’s what you think! No, I’m totally kidding! But that’s why our marriage works.

Because you two have a sense of humor?

Sarah: I still think Matthew is the funniest person I’ve ever known and I find him attractive still. I’m sure I annoy him, and I’m sure he annoys me. But it’s just normal. It’s a marriage, it’s the real nitty gritty and the good and the bad.

Luke, ever had someone you know move in on a girl you dated?

Luke: I had a friend in high school who was always hot on my trail. I was always like, “Joey, what’s the story? We just broke up, do you really need to ask her out this weekend?!”

Contributing Entertainment Editor Susan Hornik has never pulled a switcheroo either—but she’s definitely been tempted!
