You might be clinically depressed, or just have a bad case of the “Blues” whatever is happening to you, you are scared, worried and fearful of the future.

Byron Katie

Byron Katie is the author of “Loving What Is, Four Questions That Can Change Your Life!” Katie had fallen into darkness at the age of 43. She did not even brush her teeth. She had become bitter, addictive and acrophobic. She had spells of contemplating suicide, of locking herself away from her family, not even stepping out of her own bedroom. She believed, “the world does not understand my suffering, my pain! I am worthless!” Overcome by rage she cursed God, thought of herself as a victim, even though she was living the classic all American lifestyle, certainly money was not an issue. Yet, nothing would hold back her perception that only death could relieve the intensity of her emotional pain.

Then one grey February morning something mind-blowing happened to Katie. She was sprawled on the floor, because she did not believe she deserved a bed, when a cockroach walked over her foot. She was shocked to see such a repulsive insect in her pristine home. Immediately a lightning bolt of realization struck her. She understood that whenever she believed thoughts that went against her true nature, her heart, her intelligence, her goodness, emotional pain would be the inevitable result.

Oprah Winfrey

She said to Oprah Winfrey, “Suddenly I discovered that when I believed my bad thoughts, I suffered, but that when I didn’t believe them and chose to transform them into positive thoughts, I didn’t suffer, and that this is true for every human being. Freedom is as simple as that. I found that suffering is optional. I found a joy within me that has never disappeared, not for a single moment. That joy is in everyone, always!

Katie’s work is to teach us to choose what we think. “If we just questioned stressful thoughts in our minds the good thoughts start to work for us. If you say, “I love my children”; “My life is beautiful” “I have what I want” and can believe that you no longer give your negative mind the power to lie to you. When we question what we believe, in other words, we see that we are not our thoughts; we are beyond them.

The four questions Katie trains us to ask are:

1) Is what I am thinking true?

2) What is the proof that what I am thinking is true?

3) How do I react when I think this thought?

4) How would I be if I did not believe that thought?

As we spiritualise our thinking and alter our “vision” of reality. As we detach from negative beliefs, we start to “spiritualise” our thinking. So rather than focussing on the horrors of war, swine flu and material lack, Katie encourages us to innovate our process of “seeing” reality. We can start by listening to some beautiful music or looking up at a star studded night sky. In other words seek out the wonder in life and build on the beauty of it.

Scientific Proof

It has been scientifically proven that prayer; meditation and positive thinking actually change the structure of the human brain. So could it be that as we transform our thoughts, as we refine our reality, as we interface with a new way of being, we become evolved, happier human beings, living our lives with true meaning? Now that is an idea to contemplate on, along with the mysterious power of Byron Katie’s healing methods. We suggest you buy her book “Loving What Is, Four Questions That Can Change Your Life!” because we are certain you will not only learn about yourself as a result, but also learn to understand others’ suffering. Now that is a life enhancing opportunity isn’t it?
