Aspects used in Astrology

The Sun, the Moon, and all the planets have a certain position in the Zodiac, and this position has a measurement so it can be related to other positions in the Zodiac. Let’s the Sun is at 25 degrees of Taurus at the time of someone's birth, and the Moon is at 25 degrees of Cancer. Since each sign has thirty degrees, the Sun and the Moon are exactly sixty degrees apart in the Zodiac, as shown in the diagram.

Let’s also suppose the planet Mars is at 25 degrees of Sagittarius as shown in the diagram. This means the angular distance between the Sun and Mars is 180 degrees and the angular distance between the Moon and Mars is 120 degrees. These numbers are significant in astrology. They are called "aspects". There are many aspects, usually multiples of 30 degrees, and each one of them has a special name and a special astrological meaning. Here is a list of the major aspects and a few minor ones with their angular measurements:

Aspect Name Angular Value
CONJUNCTION 0
OPPOSITION 180
QUINCUNX 150
SESQUI - QUADRATE 144
TRINE 120
SQUARE 90
SEPTILE 72
SEXTILE 60
SEMI - SEXTILE 30

Planets may or may not form aspects with each other, although there will always be some aspects. Note that if a planet forms an aspect to another planet, and that planet forms an aspect to a third planet, then the third planet will form an aspect to, or "be in aspect to", the first planet. Because it is unlikely that the angular distances in the Zodiac will be exactly the values given above, some "margin of error", is allowed. This margin is called the "orb" in astrological parlance. If in the above example the Sun had been at 24 degrees of Taurus instead of 25, and the Moon had been at 26 degrees of Cancer instead of 25, then these two planets would be 62 degrees apart in the Zodiac. If we are using an orb of 2 or 3 degrees then we can say that, "within orb, the Sun is in Sextile aspect to the Moon". Often a larger orb is used - usually 7 or 8 degrees, and if either the Sun or the Moon are involved in the aspect then this orb may be increased by an additional two degrees.
